The Appeal
Could anything be more Eighties in spirit and character than a Porsche 924, apart from possibly a 911? The 924 might have served as Porsche’s entry model from the mid-Seventies until the late Eighties, but it was pioneering (by the manufacturer’s standards) in its use of a water-cooled front-mounted engine. Many 924s had automatic gearboxes (another Porsche first), but this example was specified with a manual – and it’s all the more driveable for it.
This car has spent its life in Italy, though its Guards Red paintwork doesn’t appear unduly sun-bleached. It retains all those quintessential 924 attributes, from pop-up headlamps to a full-length rubbing strip. The rear end sports a deep aftermarket bumper below a discreet black spoiler, while outsized Porsche lettering appears everywhere from the steering wheel and door cards to below the rear light clusters. About the only place you won’t find Porsche badging is in the shallow (yet wide and long) boot below a lift-up glass rear window.
Inside, the half-leather and fabric front seats appear to be in good order, with carpeting reprised around the stubby gearlever on the centre console. The dashboard looks to be original bar an aftermarket Kenwood CD player, with a trio of cowled central gauges separated from the three-pod binnacle of dials and warning lights set behind that chunky three-spoke steering wheel. The heavily sculpted rear seats are divided by a vertiginous transmission tunnel, but the 924’s generously large greenhouse and panoramic roof make the most of this modest space, aided by this car’s pale fabric colour palette.
