The Appeal
Here is the sort of car that we love to find - an everyday example of a brilliant Golf Mk2 hatchback that is now considerably rarer than the GTI version. That is a very low mileage and highly original unmodified car, further dials up the appeal.
This 1984 Mk2 is a ‘posh’ GL model with the 1.6L engine allied to the 4+E manual gearbox that Volkswagen introduced to push the economy message. The car presents really well, the highly original, hardwearing beige fabric mated to a recently repainted burgundy exterior. Aside from the aftermarket alloys, which we rather like, it is entirely factory correct.
The vendor tells us that the car began its life in France before being moved to Portugal when its first keeper relocated. It stayed with him for many years before passing to a local mechanic on his death. The vendor acquired it in early 2025.
We’re told that it has been regularly serviced throughout its life. Since buying it the vendor has taken the same approach, telling us that whatever it has needed, he’s done. There is a long list of that work below, highlights including a full service and refreshed brake fluid. The car comes to market with the reassurance of a lengthy technical inspection valid to April 2026.
The vendor says:
“What makes my Golf so unique and why I bought it: - I've always wanted to try a car from 1980s era - true, simple and engaging into driving with no excessive electronics; - I really enjoy the look of mk2 Golf - it's just so simple, classic and enjoyable! It is the essence of C-class. - the combination of exterior and interior colors. I enjoy dark red body paint and the way it combines with beige-brown interior. I just couldn't resist! It gives me pleasure every time I come by my Golf.
“Although it's not a GTI, my Golf 1.6 with MT is quite fun to drive - the steering and gas pedal are very responsive. In fact, sometimes I forget that it has only 72 HP - the engine's pretty much inviting for action. And when you just want to make it from A to B, the car just does it, not bothering you - choose the best gear (3rd or 4th, depending on the road type) and relax!”
