The Appeal
From the 1980s to the early ‘90s, the Austin Montego sold in large numbers in the UK, though a high scrapping rate means that few survive today. Spacious, refined and well-equipped, the Montego was to prove the swansong of the Austin marque. A range of models was offered, topped by the sporty MG variants and the luxurious Austin Montego Vanden Plas, powered only by the larger engine and featuring a generous level of standard equipment, included leather seats.
This Vanden Plas is from the Montego’s early years, being registered in 1986. It was purchased by the seller in 2024 – who bought it from the family that had owned it from new. The car has been garaged for most of its life, and carefully maintained. Since 2024, when a new battery was reportedly fitted, it has covered only around 500 miles. It carries useful MOT to September 2027 with only one minor advisory. That could be the car's last as it will be eligible for Historic Vehicle status from 1st April 2027 based on first registration.
Both the exterior and interior are highly original – down to the cassette holders and mirror in the glove box. MG alloy wheels have been fitted, including a spare to enable imperial-sized tires to be fitted; the original metric-specification Vanden Plas items are supplied with the car, together with an additional spare wheel insert. The gray velour seats are described as "extremely comfortable". The original rubber floor mats are in place, and additional protective floor mats have been fitted. All other interior and trunk trim is stated to be correct.
The seller notes that the car is "extremely comfortable drive" and "a huge head-turner that prompts nostalgic comments and complements", and a relatively minor amount of cosmetic work would take it even closer to its original glory. A new owner is now sought for ‘Monty’, who will doubtless provide them with back-to-the-‘80s enjoyment.
