The Appeal
The Land Cruisers were selling like iced lattes over in the USA, but they were having a much harder time in the Japanese Domestic Market. Fuel costs were beginning to spike towards the close of the Japanese Economic Miracle, and the marque began focusing on tightening belts and rationalising their station wagons.
What they came up with may not fit our traditional image of simplification. The HJ61 was an effortlessly cool off-roader, with an impressively economic turbo diesel engine that gave plenty of grunt and lifted a little bit of pressure off of customers hit by the ongoing petrol crisis. Elsewhere, it was beautifully styled, comfortable and could stick to hills like a mountain goat.
The HJ61 never made it out of Japan - it was specifically a JDM exercise - and they're incredibly rare this side of the planet. Imported just eight months ago, it's in fine order, with an impressive luxury cabin. If you're a collector, this is the rarest of rare grooves, and if you're an enthusiast, it'll prove a very, very rewarding off-roader.
