The Appeal
The Mitsubishi Galant was never a head-turner, and yet its sheer modesty made it a highly desirable family car in the early 1990s. It came in coupe, 4x4 and high-tech four-wheel steering guises, yet the most popular versions were always the more affordable GLS and fuel-injected GLSi trims.
Today, this understated saloon would be a perfect representative at the Festival of the Unexceptional. It’s a 1991 GLSi, combining all-round electric windows and a sunroof with the wheeltrims and fabric seats which marked it out as the most affordable fuel-injected Galant on sale in the UK. Despite having covered 85,000 miles, the interior remains in excellent condition – “as it left the factory”, in the words of its current owner.
Internally, this car is a testament to the quality Mitsubishi invested into their cars. The seats in particular have shrugged off 34 years of use, remaining plump and well-shaped with all exposed fabric surfaces in excellent order. The door cards and carpets are also well-preserved, and the classic three-dial dash appears barely used, still retaining a Philips radio cassette player ahead of the automatic transmission gearlever with its overdrive button. Only the three-spoke steering wheel and electric window switches show significant signs of use, reflecting both how well-built this car originally was, and how well-cared for it’s been subsequently.
