The Appeal

This low owner, low mileage example has extensive service history and received a partial respray in 2021 to improve the aesthetics and structure.  With a long MOT and recently serviced it looks like a very good, usable example of this appreciating super saloon.

The vendor acquired this car in 2018 on 95,000 miles.  The first owner was a company director before it passed to a police high speed pursuit driver who used it as his personal car.  It then was in the long term ownership of a Jaguar enthusiast.

The car was in very solid condition but required servicing.  Since 2018 the seller has expended around £5,000 on the car using his own personal workshop and local specialists.  The all-important gearbox and supercharger services were carried out in 2021 and the car also treated to bodywork rectification and respray in the same year.  This was to remedy corrosion around the rear arches which is typical of this model. 

The Interior

• Nicely appointed cream and black interior with wooden trims
• Desirable electric steel sunroof model 
• Interior shows light signs of wear, with the veneers carrying some light scratches 
• Dashboard shows light signs of wear but all instruments are clear
• Cream leather shows some wear throughout with some scuffs and marks
• Door cards are largely in good order, with some scuffing and scratching
• Wooden veneers on the door cards shows some light cracking
• The driver’s seat shows surface cracking to the bolsters 
• Carpets show some age-commensurate wear
• Headlining is sagging and may need replacing
• The vendor believes the radio is working but has not used it in some time

• Round the back, the boot is in good order with very little wear and a good spare wheel

The X300 shares its interior with the XJ40 on which it is based but got higher quality plastics to improve the sense of Jaguar-ness. XJR versions stuck closely to the template of the more mainstream models but got dark wood veneers and sports seats.

This X306 XJR is finished in cream leather, which contrasts nicely with those dark wood veneers.  The condition is very original and good for the year, with only localised deterioration in common places such as on the driver's seat bolster.  The wood veneers are good but with some light signs of cracking on the door cards, which is common for this model.

The car is fitted with a desirable optional sunroof.  The headlining is sagging in places, a common X300 issue, for which there are kits available at around £160 and can be fitted without specialist tools or knowledge. 

The Exterior 

• Silver-blue colour scheme with chrome and black trims
• Bodywork in good condition but with some marks, scuffs and scratches

• We discerned a couple of shallow dents on the bonnet 
• The vendor notes a scuff to the front bumper’s nearside corner
• Light wear and scratches to the sills and lower regions of the car
• Some light bubbling around the sunroof 
• Small area of bubbling on the offside rear arch

• Car is sitting on its original alloys in fair condition 
• Shod in a decent set of tyres with a fair level of tread
• Underneath, the car appears solid with only surface corrosion

The X306 is based on the X300, which was itself an evolution of the XJ40 of the 1980s. The two cars are essentially the same save for different front and rear treatments, the X300 receiving a more retro look to suite with Jaguar's heritage theme of the mid 1990s.

Finished in light blue metallic this car received some bodywork investment during 2021 which involved rectifying rot in the rear arches.  This involved cutting back corrosion and refitting new panels.  The arches, a common weak point on these models, remain in good condition with only a small bloom of bubbling visible on the offside rear arch.  Elsewhere there are some small rust bubbles on the panel in front of the sunroof.

The car sits on its factory alloy wheels which are in presentable condition.

The Mechanics 

• Powered by the supercharged Jaguar 4litre AJ6 engine 
• Married to a 4spd GM4L80-E automatic transmission
• The engine bay appears to be in fair order with no major issues we can highlight
• The car is reportedly working exactly as expected
• The vendor has made sure to keep it regularly serviced
• No reports of faults, knocks or leaks from the vendor

For most of the life of this car the vendor operated a classic car workshop which maintained the car without concern for the expense. This means that the extensive service history from prior to his ownership has been carefully maintained.

The service work has also included flushing and refreshing the fluids for the gearbox and supercharger in 2021. Other maintenance including shock absorbers and belts has been undertaken as required. The car has been freshly serviced for sale.
