The Appeal
While its competitors chased each other's tails to deliver fizzy hot hatches, in the mid-90s, VW pushed in a different direction. The goal was a sort of luxury mini GT, and key to delivering it was the firm's clever VR6 2.8L 174bhp powerplant.
The Mk3 VR6 is a car with few equals. That grunty V6 and, in Highline spec as here, a sumptuous interior, provide a mix of performance and luxury that makes these rare cars sought out. This one is finished in the desirable combination of Purple Violet metallic with ultra-rare Mulberry leather cabin. It has covered just 32,000 documented miles from new so is in quite remarkable condition.
The car is a testament to its handful of keepers. They have not only looked after the interior and exterior, but kept the servicing up to date despite the paltry mileage. There is a run of 21 stamps to 31,712 miles, all but two of them by VW main dealers. The others are by marque specialists.
The last MOT expired in May but with no advisories on the last test, renewing it should be straightforward.
