The Appeal
The E36 is what wrestler would describe as a slam dunk. In a single move BMW spelt the death knell for mid-market motors like the Mondeo and Vectra and gave company and private car buyers one of the greatest range of saloons, coupes and convertibles of the last 30 years.
What made the car so good was its ability to engage the driver, without modern nannying technology, whilst delivering decent performance. Outside of the tarmac-sizzling M3, the E36 you really want is a 328i because the M52 straight six is a shining gem of a motor.
To that compelling mix, this 1999 car adds the versatility of a convertible roof and a relaxing auto box. Perfect, then, for some summer Uk and European touring.
It is a very low mileage car that has had just five keepers in its quarter century, the last one for 20 years. Finished in popular mid blue with matching roof and black leather interior, it is a very well car whose sparing use is clear from the condition.
The thick history file includes a carefully annotated spreadsheet documenting all expenditure from new up to July 2022. Subsequent invoices show regular investment with notable highlights including £2,000 expended on replacing the roof fabric. In August 2024 the car was serviced by a well regarded specialist, with extra work including differential and gearbox fluids. The brake pipes and discs were also replaced to rectify advisories on the previous MOT.
The car is only for sale due to a change of circumstances and the vendor tells us that he will be very sad to see it go. It comes to market with MOT to June 2025, with advisories rectified as described.
