Two decades before Jaguar decided to copy nothing by manufacturing nothing, it was producing examples of automotive art like the XK. Designed by Ian Callum, this X150 generation was longer, wider but lighter than the outgoing X100 model, shedding its predecessor’s wood-lined interior but gaining driver-focused shift paddles behind the steering wheel.
This is one of the earliest second-generation XKs to roll off the production line, fitted with Jaguar’s famous 4.2-litre V8 and paired with a slick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. It’s unusual to find a 2005-dated XK when the model wasn’t officially launched until 2006, but this was a Jaguar press car, used to showcase the XK’s merits to the media. The car’s exterior cuts as much of a dash today as it would have done while being photographed by Millennial media outlets. Its chromework sparkles in sunshine, the paintwork appears glossy and well-preserved, and split five-spoke alloy wheels are all shod in matching Dunlop SP tyres.
Less visible parts also appear to be in good presentational order, such as the engine bay and bonnet liner, with a retained tyre changing kit and spare wheel tucked away beneath the boot floor. Despite their pale hue, the perforated ivory leather seats are wearing well apart from some creasing and discolouration on the driver’s seat bolster, while the navy headliner and grey carpets show few signs of wear. The central infotainment screen lights up and appears to be working, with little evidence of the car’s mileage across the dashboard or centre console.
This car’s provenance is attested to by a certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust confirming that the chassis number matches an original vehicle record for a former Jaguar press car. The current owner has had this XK for three years and describes it as being in excellent condition, riding beautifully. In the hands of a sympathetic future owner, it’s easy to imagine this car continuing to ooze refinement and understated elegance for many years to come. image.png4.81 MB
