The Appeal
The MK5 Golf R32 represents the last hurrah for Volkswagen's naturally aspirated performance flagship; a 250bhp 3.2-litre V6 in a hot hatch, paired here with the more desirable six-speed manual gearbox. Beyond the engine, the chassis received a comprehensive overhaul to handle the added weight and power. The car sat 20mm lower on dedicated sports suspension with stiffer springs and dampers, significantly sharpening the handling. Braking was also heavily upgraded, featuring massive 345mm front discs tucked behind 18-inch 'Zolder' alloy wheels. With production now two decades in the past, these cars have firmly established themselves as modern classics, and demand for well-kept examples continues to grow.
This particular R32 was supplied new by Caffyns of Eastbourne in March 2006, ordered in Diamond Black with leather trim, and purchased as a 60th birthday present for its first keeper, a lady in Hove, East Sussex, where the car spent the majority of its life. It passed to its second registered keeper in 2023, who promptly commissioned a programme of work totalling approximately £14,000.
The history file is reassuringly thorough, with ten service stamps, supporting invoices, some MOT certificates, and notably, the original bill of sale from Caffyns. Both sets of keys and all handbooks in their R32 leather-bound folder are present. Since the 2023 refurbishment, the car has reportedly covered around 700 miles.
For those seeking one of the most collectable hot hatches of the modern era, this well-documented R32 warrants serious attention.
