The Appeal

The 2020 Alpina B5 Biturbo (G30) is a seriously quick yet understated saloon, offering a more refined and exclusive take on the BMW M5 formula. Based on the BMW 5 Series, Alpina reworked the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 to deliver 600hp, alongside 800Nm of torque. Power is channelled through a specially tuned eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system, making it one of the fastest luxury saloons on the road. It’s capable of around 322 km/h and will cover 0–100 km/h in roughly 3.6 seconds.

What really defines the B5 is how it delivers that performance. Rather than feeling overtly aggressive, it combines immense pace with a level of comfort more in line with a long-distance cruiser. Alpina’s changes include its own adaptive suspension setup, with revised springs, dampers, and active rear-wheel steering to improve both composure and agility. The Comfort Plus mode stands out in particular, offering a noticeably softer ride than a standard 5 Series and making the car exceptionally well-suited to motorway driving. It remains capable in the corners, but it doesn’t chase the sharp, track-focused feel of an M5.

Visually, the B5 saloon keeps a discreet, low-key presence. Subtle aerodynamic additions and Alpina’s signature multi-spoke wheels hint at its performance without drawing too much attention. Inside, the focus is on craftsmanship and detail, including a numbered plaque on the centre console. Despite its performance credentials, it retains the everyday usability of the 5 Series saloon, with a comfortable cabin, generous space, and all the expected technology and driver assistance features.
