Description
The Triumph Acclaim was launched in October 1981. They were assembled at Cowley and based on the Honda Ballade with various tweaks for the UK market including twin Kehin carburettors. The car was the first of several collaborations between Honda and BL and the last to carry the Triumph badge.
This Acclaim HLS is believed to be the oldest one on UK roads, registered in early November 1981 (just three weeks after launch) with various early features. The mileage is correct at just 37, 000 with condition to match.
The original owner passed away when the car was just a few years old and it was subsequently garaged with very occasional use for the next thirty years, hence the low mileage. It was finally sold by the original owner’s wife in 2019 and re-commissioned by the chairman of the Triumph Sports six club. Two subsequent owners have enjoyed the car and fitted various replacement parts. The last owner is a regular customer of ours and decided with advancing years to buy a modern car. At the time of the original re-commissioning, a new battery, brakes and four Toyo tyres were fitted. More recently it has also had a cam belt and water pump, custom built stainless exhaust, re-cored radiator and cooling system overhaul and several services. It has also been Waxoyled twice, had a new clutch and various other minor parts. The last owner also had a set of perfectly fitting seat covers custom made at a cost of £600. The original velour seats are in reasonable order with some bagginess as is common with BL velour from the era and the covers are removable if required.
As you would expect, this Acclaim drives beautifully and is very useable as a modern classic. It is tax and MOT exempt. A file of recent work has been compiled and the car also comes with original dealer pack, service book handbook, accessory catalogue, two keys and heritage certificate.
This Acclaim is ready to use and drive anywhere. It’s in outstanding condition, may well be the best one left and is certain to attract attention on the show circuit this Summer. Clearly no rust and never been welded!
