- 88-inch short-wheelbase Series III
- Replacement galvanised chassis
- Well sorted with substantial service history
Introduced in 1971, the Series III represented the next significant development of the Land Rover formula that had begun with the original Series I in 1948. While retaining the essential ladder-frame chassis, leaf-sprung suspension and part-time four-wheel-drive system that had made the Land Rover such a versatile working vehicle, the new model brought a number of important improvements, including an all-synchromesh gearbox, revised interior and dashboard, and a more integrated grille and headlamp arrangement. The Series III would ultimately become the longest-produced iteration of the original Land Rover before the arrival of the Defender.
This 1972 88-inch example is powered by the familiar 2. 25-litre petrol four-cylinder engine and is equipped with the desirable short-wheelbase configuration. A tropical or ‘Safari’ roof is fitted, providing an additional layer of insulation from heat and helping to keep the cabin cooler, while also contributing to the unmistakable appearance of an expedition-equipped Land Rover.
ETO 194L is presented in the classic utilitarian 'Limestone' hue, resprayed and presenting well. The bodywork is described as honest and straight. The Land Rover has benefited from the installation of a replacement galvanised chassis, providing a sound structural foundation for assured future use. The truck is presented running and driving well and mechanically sorted, while a substantial service history demonstrates consistent maintenance and servicing throughout its life.
Accompanied by a current MoT certificate (with no advisories), ETO 194L presents as an honest and usable example rather than a showpiece. Its sound mechanical condition, replacement galvanised chassis, practical Safari roof and straightforward specification makes it an appealing proposition to be pressed into service right away.
More than half a century after its introduction, the Series III remains one of the most recognisable British utility vehicles ever produced. Simple, capable and enduringly charismatic, this 88-inch example retains the qualities for which the original Land Rover became such an important part of Britain's motoring and engineering heritage.
