Do you know what the problem is with the Jaguar XJ? It never shouts for attention. While the rest of the world spent the 2000s dreaming up ever more angular, aggressive, LED-laden designs, Jaguar simply kept doing what it did best: building a car that looks as though it were born in the lobby of a London gentlemen's club. Long, low, elegant, with that signature oval grille and those feline headlamps. A car that doesn't need to prove it's there. It just is, and you know it, and that's enough.
And then they dropped a supercharged 4. 2 litre V8 into it.
A bit of context: this X350 generation XJ might just be the cleverest Jaguar they ever built, and at the same time the most underrated. Why? Because from the outside the thing looks like the XJ your uncle the solicitor drives, yet underneath it hides a full aluminium monocoque. Lighter than most rivals, stiffer, and therefore surprisingly nimble for such a stately vessel. Jaguar had borrowed this from the aerospace world, and you feel it. The car is big on paper but on the road it feels a size smaller than it actually is.
