Original 1,600 cc petrol engine present and reportedly in fine fettle
The Appeal
Now that Land Rover is an enormous multinational brand, it's hard to believe that when this example left Lode Lane in 1949, its designers never intended for it to last beyond the period of Britain's post-war steel shortages. Masterminded by the Wilkes brothers, who ran Rover at the time, the 'Land Rover' was created out of necessity. Britain needed a simple and dependable utility vehicle to aid its post-war recovery and Rover looked to the wartime Willys Jeep as inspiration.
The earliest 80" examples, with their headlamps behind the radiator grille, are especially sought after among Land Rover collectors. Dating from the second year of production, this 1949 example is a significant piece of Land Rover history and it's been meticulously restored by a marque specialist.
The restoration involved removal of all bodywork from the chassis , restoration of the original bulkhead by specialist prior to full respray and a nut and bolt rebuild. The re-galvanised parts were refitted with the original resprayed panels. It also included the installation of new seats matching the exact period specification, and the reconditioning period features such as its original steering wheel. Unusually, the original 1,600 cc petrol engine is retained and is reportedly in good running order.
