The Appeal
For those in the know, namely people who’ve been lucky enough to drive or own one, the 944 is one of the greatest front-engined coupes of the last 40 years. It’s all down to the delicately balanced transaxle layout, torquey 4cyl engines and impeccable Porsche engineering.
These cars are known for their durability, with many arriving on the market with high mileages. Not so this car, which has spent much of its life in careful dry storage between 1992 and 2020. The odometer shows less than 52,000 miles, barely run in for a M44 motor, and most of it amassed in the first couple of years. It is in remarkably preserved condition inside and out. It has had just one keeper throughout its 39 years.
The car remains factory standard in classic Guards Red with period 15in ‘teledials.’ The vendor tells us that the car was recommissioned in 2020, since when it has barely covered 400 miles. Work at the time covered timing belt, brakes and window seals. More recently it has received a major service and the underside has been undersealed. It comes to market with advisory-free MOT valid to May 2027. Based on DVLA data, it will be eligible for Historic Vehicle status in April 2028, which buyers can check and verify.
This is a rare find for 80s enthusiasts and one of the nicest 944s we’ve seen in a long while.
