Extensively restored in 1983, debuting at the HCVS London to Brighton Run in 1984
Traditional signwriting completed using genuine gold leaf
Fully operational tipping system with a body built new by Thompson's
The Appeal
The Leyland Comet was a stalwart of British haulage through the 1950s and beyond, serving as Leyland's medium-weight workhorse. Powered by the O.350 inline-six and equipped with a five-speed gearbox and two-speed rear axle, the Comet was built to earn its keep. Surviving examples in restored, running condition are scarce finds.
This 1954 tipper was acquired by its current keeper in 1982 and subjected to an extensive restoration the following year. The cab was repaired, the chassis was stripped, cleaned and repainted, and the brakes and running gear were overhauled. A replacement gearbox and new clutch were fitted, while the engine required only external cleaning and refinishing, with no internal work deemed necessary. Thompson's built an entirely new tipping body, and the red livery was finished with traditional gold-leaf signwriting. The lorry made its public debut at the 1984 HCVS London to Brighton Run.
Today, it continues to present exceedingly well, as the photographs attest. It's time for a new custodian to continue this classic commercial's care.IMG_0159 Jodh.jpeg2.97 MB
