The Appeal
Michelotti’s pretty TR4 kick-started a lineage of torquey Triumph sports cars that continued into the 1970s. Most were exported, with just 2,592 registered in the UK RHD like this much-historied 1963 car. It is rarer still in being fitted with the innovative Surrey Top, selected by just 10-15% of original buyers.
We’re told that the first keeper of this light blue car was Berkshire’s Bray Studios, who featured it in the 1963 B movie ‘Hysteria.’ After a couple of short-term keepers, the vendor acquired it in March 1968 and has cherished and curated it ever since. This is a car that has lived a life and been used and enjoyed rather than merely shown.
Maintenance highlights during that long custodianship have included fitting overdrive shortly after purchase, which the car still has, and rebuilding the engine in the 1990s. More recently, in 2017, the bodywork was renovated, and the car was resprayed in light blue with a dark blue roof. Other improvements include more comfortable Mazda seats, a common TR upgrade, and a new starter motor, dynamo and water pump. In 2026, there was a switch to more reliable electronic ignition. Aside from that, we’re told the car is standard and retains its factory engine.
Naturally, a car that has been owned for 58 years comes with a massive history file. Some of those highlights are included in the photos. The vendor describes it as looking good, handling well and attracting compliments from passers-by — a characterful and well-cared-for British sports car. Come for this TR4’s fascinating provenance, stay for the pretty Michelotti styling and engaging handling.
The vendor says:
“She drives as a 60s-type heavy sports car. I rarely exceed 3000rpm (approx. 75mph) - she is fitted with some soundproofing. As she has hard top and soft top options, she is good to drive in most weathers.”
