The Appeal

Introduced in 1976, the original BMW 6 Series combined Paul Bracq’s elegant coupé styling with the performance and refinement expected of the marque’s flagship two-door model. Its long bonnet, low glasshouse and distinctive shark-nose profile gave the E24 a presence all its own, while beneath the surface sat the sophisticated engineering for which BMW’s larger cars had become known.

The 635 CSi arrived in 1978 as the most powerful regular-production version of the range, pairing a fuel-injected 3.5-litre straight-six with a more sporting chassis and generous equipment. Producing 215bhp in this early specification, it established the formula that would make the 635 CSi the most successful member of the first-generation 6 Series.

This 1979 example has been with the seller for approximately 13 years, having reportedly remained with its previous owner from the early-to-mid 1990s. During current ownership, it has been kept in dry, insulated storage and exercised only occasionally, with the seller noting that it has never been taken out in the rain.

The seller also praises its mechanical condition, reporting that the engine starts almost immediately and that it drives very well. With long-term ownership behind it and comparatively limited use in recent years, this early 635 CSi now offers its next custodian the chance to return one of BMW’s most distinctive grand touring coupés to more regular enjoyment.

Hello, I notice rust blistering through in both doors, in your opinion how is the rust situation overall, as in sills and arches and panels? Thank you and good luck with the auction

Thank you for your interest, there is almost no rust visable throughout the car apart from the paint blistering in a few places, as per photos. The spots of blistering are quite small and are only in a few areas on the car. The arches as per photos are in excellent conditions, panels are in excellent condition, there is a little bit of minor rust forming at one end of both cills towards the front of the car. Its very minor and would be an easy repair. Otherwise 95% + of the sills look perfect.

When was it brought into the Republic, what evidence is available, and has Revenue confirmed the amount needed to register it?

Yes the car is based in Ireland. The car was purchased from Northern Ireland 13 years ago. It was my intention to drive it more and to register it. Unfortunately time constraints due to running a business, building a home, family etc, I never had the time to thoroughly enjoy the car and it has remained in storage with the occasional drive. You’re welcome to come and view the car.

Hi. The registration note shows the colour as blue. Has the colour been changed as some stage?

Hi there, the car underwent a major restoration by the previous owner approximately 20 years ago. As far as I can remember, when I purchased the car, I was told that the colour had been changed. There are absolutely no signs anywhere on the car to indicate that it was previously blue, so I would imagine it received a complete professional respray as part of the restoration.
