The Appeal
Based on the legendary WRX STI, the Subaru Impreza S203 of 2004-05 featured a host of enhancements to increase its performance, handling and desirability, and Petter Solberg, lead driver of the Subaru World Rally Team at the time, was involved in its testing. Only 555 examples were produced.
The balanced engine featured a larger turbine in its twin-scroll turbocharger, as well as a titanium exhaust with equal-length exhaust manifold. Larger anti-roll bars and specially tuned dampers and springs were installed, and the lowered suspension was fitted with several pillow ball bushes. Special carbon fibre front and adjustable rear STI spoilers were fitted, and the interior was equipped with unique carbon-shelled Recaro bucket seats.
This car, number 190 of the 555 made, was imported from Japan by its seller and has been kept off the road (SORN) in a garage since. Outside, the car retains its Crystal Grey Metallic colour and gunmetal alloy wheels, behind which sit the gold Brembo brake callipers. The seller reports a few minor blemishes and states that “a few clips are missing”.
Inside, the two-tone interior with unique Recaro front seats is highly original, including the distinctive pink STI trim on the gear lever and steering wheel and the numbered S203 identifier on the gear lever surround. Some wear is reported on the passenger seat, including a small (“5p-sized”) hole.
The S203 is a truly rare version of the Impreza WRX STI. As the new owner of this example will discover, unlike some other ‘special editions’, the S203 incorporates a wide range of upgrades that not only enhance its performance but also make it more engaging to drive.
