The 6T Thunderbird was introduced at the beginning of the 1950s as Triumph's new 649cc parallel-twin flagship, developed from Edward Turner's successful Speed Twin. It was created largely in response to demand for greater performance and torque, particularly from the American market, and quickly became one of Triumph's defining post-war motorcycles. Period specification included approximately 34 bhp, a four-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

The 650 Thunderbird also built an impressive reputation for durability. Prototype machines famously completed a 500-mile endurance run at the Montlhéry circuit in France at an average speed of over 90 mph, helping establish the model's reputation for fast, dependable long-distance performance.

This example has a lovely traditional appearance and retains many period features visible in the photographs, including the distinctive Triumph headlamp nacelle with integral Smiths speedometer and ammeter, sprung solo saddle, wire-spoke wheels, telescopic front forks, drum brakes, tank-mounted luggage rack and polished exhaust system.

The bike presents as a very honest, characterful older classic rather than an over-restored machine, with attractive age-related patina across the paintwork, alloy and brightwork.

The 1950s 650 Triumphs are now firmly established as highly collectable British motorcycles, combining classic Edward Turner styling with one of the most important parallel-twin engines of the post-war era.
