The Appeal
Buick’s Super was introduced in 1940 and the name was appropriate - this was a big, imposing family saloon that evolved through a series designs well into the 1950s. This example is one of the later -54 to ‘56 models designed under the direction of Harley Earl during Detroit’s ‘imperial’ phase.
As you can see in the photos, it is both magnificent and imposing, particularly in the stand-out green and yellow of this car. That colour scheme is the result of an older repaint applied following the vendor’s acquisition of the car in 1996. Since then it has formed part of his private collection and been very sparingly used. He tells us that he imported the car from the USA where it had been barn-stored for many years.
Beneath the bonnet is GM’s venerable ‘Nailhead’ 322CI 5.3L V8 while inside there is a lovely two-tone green and cream interior with some marvellous original features like the radio and two-spoke Bakelite wheel.
This car harks back to the glorious ‘50s Americana era and has clearly been loved.
The vendor says:
“I have been a collector of American cars for many years and this is the finest I have owned and the one that I have most enjoyed. It drives beautifully and it's very smooth . I like everything about the car it's shape, colour and also the fact that it was the deluxe model of the car used by Broderick Crawford in Highway Patrol - an American crime drama series of the 1950s.”
