The Background
The Citroen DS is a front engined, front wheel drive executive car and was introduced by Citroen in 1955 and ended production in 1975. The cars design was aerodynamic and had a futuristic stance to it, the innovative technology was way ahead of its time which included the first mass production car with hydropneumatic suspension along with disc brakes as well.
In 1967 the addition of directional headlights was also incorporated. The cars design and engineering were overseen by Italian sculptor Flaminio Bertoni and French aeronautical engineer Andre Lefebvre. The 1967 series 3 facelift was overseen by Robert Opron. The DS model in its lifetime produced 1,455,746 examples and it is to this day one of the most iconic designs in the automotive industry.
The car has won many plaudits over the years and was placed third in 1999 in the Car of the Century poll, Classic and Sports car magazine named it the most beautiful car of all time.
The History
The current owner has owned the vehicle for two years and purchased it from a Citroen enthusiast in Portugal where it spent eleven years of its life parading along the Algarve. The car from 2008-19 has extensive paperwork which is shown and no expense has been spared to keep it to a high standard.
The previous owner imported the car from France where the car had been restored by a renowned DS specialist, Garage Van Der Laan in the Netherlands. It was part of a collection that belonged to the owner and was used on a regular basis, the current owner has also been using it as a daily recently with the appearance of some dry weather and sunshine.
The seller would love to keep hold of the car but is moving it on to fund a current 1967 DS restoration, in total he has had six of these models over the years.
The Paperwork
The car has four owners, and paperwork is extensive since 2008, all receipts are shown which includes the current owners recent bill for a service and other parts in April 2021, this came to a total of just over £2000.
The Interior
This car has the full brown leather upholstery which includes the middle arm console, this was fitted around 2015 and is in excellent condition throughout with no marks on it at all. The car has had new door sill rubbers, carpets are in good condition and the owner believes these could still be the originals, they do need a good clean but have no signs of excessive wear on them at all.
The radio is period to the DS and works, all switches are functional and all manual
windows are clean in their operation. The only marks we could see are a small mark on the drivers door panel by the window winder, and some wear on the dashboard column under the steering wheel. All trims inside are in good order and the Gradulux rear window blind is clean and again operational. The footwell is clean and the centre binnacle also has the map pocket, the owner believes this to be the original carpet as it is not easy to rectify with a whole new carpet.
One other note is that a very small area of the headlining at the front is dropping, very
minor and of no impediment to the driver or passenger.
The Exterior
The car is clean with no visible scuffs, dents or marking on any of the panels. All trims around the windows, roof and doors are tidy and clean. New Hi Fly tyres were fitted to the car in April 2021 and are like new, headlights are clean and no scratches are present to the front or rear at all. The car also has the unique “Kanguru” lights which make a nice addition to the styling. Boot struts are smooth and around these areas no rust is visible, the chassis is in good order as well according to the owner.
Wheel hubs are free of marks as are the front and rear bumpers which are also in good condition. It also has the rear boot handle which is a rare addition to the car.
The Mechanics
This car as you can see has been looked after methodically by the last two owners since 2008, over €8000 was spent at DS specialist Citroen Andre in the Netherlands around 2009 where they changed all the rubbers, spheres, tubes, cardans were changed, installation of 123 electronic ignition and anything on top of this was repaired/replaced as required.
The car runs smoothly and the hydraulics are in perfect working order, as demonstrated to us by the current owner.
The Appeal
The DS was so far ahead of its time and shows the French flair for one of its most striking and desired models, this car has been lovingly looked after by all of its owners and used as well. The larger 2.3 engine, full leather interior and Tholonet paintwork make this a grand saloon that will turn heads wherever you go.
