The Attractions
Enzo Ferrari started building road cars to finance his racing cars. The F355 Challenge perfectly represents this dual nature. 108 examples were built to compete in the Challenge. These cars were based on the F355 Berlinetta with $30,000 of factory upgrades.
It was used and provided excitement on the track and on the road, exactly as Ferrari intended. After competing in 1996, it was converted for road use and driven mainly on motorways. Some of the original Challenge equipment, including the roll cage and sports seat, have been removed but are supplied with the car.
The car is efficient and in good condition, with light signs of wear on the interior consistent with age and mileage. It has recently received €10,000 worth of maintenance work at a Ferrari workshop. Work received includes a service, belt replacement and a new Challenge specification clutch.
This Ferrari has ASI certification, a technical passport and a certificate confirming that it is a Challenge version. A further advantage is that it will be exempt from paying motoring taxes from 2025. The recently renewed overhaul further confirms that we are dealing with a very well maintained and very usable example of this extremely rare and desirable model.

The Challenge was based on the standard F355 Berlinetta, with additional equipment installed at the factory for $30,000. The first cars received fewer changes. We are informed that this car was one of the first ones built.
The car participated in Challenge track racing as soon as it was built. It was later converted for street use with the removal of the racing seat and roll cage, which came with the car.
The classic red paint is in good condition with only some chipping on the front to report. The bodywork also presents itself well.
Inside, the black leather upholstery shows some signs of age and wear, reasonable for a car built to be used and driven. These details would most likely be relatively easy to rectify if the buyer so desires, or they could be left as they are, a testament to this car's history.
The Mechanics
- F129 'Dino' V8 engine of 3,495 cm³ developing 370 hp
- 6-speed manual gearbox
- Updated 1995 Challenge specifications
- Challenge cars were fitted with Brembo brakes and dedicated suspension, which this car retains Recent service, belts changed and new Challenge clutch fitted by Ferrari specialist Driven regularly, mostly on the motorway, after competitive use
- We have been told it runs correctly and drives very well, with no problems to report
The F355 was one of the last Ferraris to use the classic engine derived from the Dino, an engine originally developed for racing in the 1950s. In the Challenge it delivers 370bhp, just like in road cars. What is particularly interesting about this car are the modifications and upgrades carried out by the factory to turn it into a racing car.
These modifications include a Challenge clutch, Brembo brakes and special suspension. The result is a car with very different driving characteristics than the normal road-going versions.
All this explains why the 108 Challenge examples are so sought after. And probably also explains why this car has been so used and loved over the years. Its careful use is evidenced by the maintenance it has received, including €10,000 worth of work recently carried out by a Ferrari specialist that included a service, belt replacement and a new Challenge-spec clutch.
