1937 MG VA Tourer - Now Reserved
The smallest of the MG ‘SVW’ range, the VA, or One and a Half Litre, to give it the full title, was first shown at the 1936 Motor Show. It was effectively the replacement for the previous N Series Magnette and was very much like a scaled down version of the recently introduced 2 Litre, or SA model. As with the larger model, the new VA was available as a saloon, drophead coupe, or a four-seat tourer. Powered by a twin carburettor version of the 1548cc Wolseley 12/ 48 engine, the VA was capable of 75 mph and with the windscreen folded flat, the tourer was found to achieve 81 mph when road tested by the press, who enthused over the impressive specification as well as the performance.
In total 2407 VA models were produced in the three coachwork styles, before production ceased with the outbreak of war.
First registered in Dorset in August 1937, this Tourer found its way to Eire before moving on to Northern Ireland and finally back to England, whereupon it was reunited with its original registration number. Between 1998 - 2002, the car was the subject of a full restoration from the bare chassis, photographs on file show this being undertaken. In the ensuing years it has attended a number of events and tours.
The red weather equipment and interior trim contrasts extremely well with the cream coachwork and the car presents very well indeed. Recent work has included a rebuilt distributor, re-jetting of the carburettors, fitment of a new exhaust system and modification to the steering box to improve handling. The rev counter has been reconditioned and a service and tune up very recently carried out.
