Description
Here is my truly stunning 1968 MG Midget in the rare, but correct Midget colour of Basilica Blue. This outstanding example was totally restored around 20 years ago by a motor engineer whose own garage was MGOC recommended. He went through the car from top to bottom as he was doing it for his wife and himself. It had been with the same lady owner from 1969 until be bought it in 1996 and it remained in his ownership until I acquired it.
To look at this Midget, you would think that the restoration had been done just two years ago! That's how good it is. Panel fit and paintwork are excellent, as is the correct 1968 spec interior right down to the leather seats and the "banjo-style" steering wheel most of which have disappeared from Midgets. The underside is outstanding and in fact it is in such great order and so straight that, while I had a wet sponge in my hand, I lay on the ground and started washing the underneath. Yes, amazing I know. You won't find any welding repairs on the vehicle as the entire car was rebuilt and has been cherished ever since covering just 15, 000 miles in the past 22 years.
The hood is as new and, all in all, this Midget looks amazing. The only area I can fault her on is the front valance and you could easily buy this, use it and not realise since you have to lie on the ground in order to see beneath the bumper ha! There is some bubbling to the paint there and she could do with a small piece of metal letting in on the front nearside corner. You are probably looking at around £200 worth of work here and it's something and nothing bearing in mind the outstanding condition of this exceptional Midget.
There's a comprehensive history, detailing the mileage through more than 30 MoTs and there's letters, bills, receipts etc. Also included is the bill of sale from the garage who sold the car to the second owner in 1969 and there's the original buff log book too. Letters from the garage owner on his letter headed paper includes the business's recommendation from the MG Owners Club.
A very rare opportunity to acquire a Midget in such a rare condition and presented in such a rare and eye-catching BMC colour of the era.
Remember that these old girls are motoring antiques. Practically every one of them will have been subjected to work at some time in their long lives and they are bound to need more love and attention in the future. Context is all with classic cars. Please do not run your finger over them and compare them to your wife's new Chelsea tractor! On-going work is virtually inevitable with all of them. I do not put them through a garage "test", nor do I drive them for months on end. They come in and they go out. I feel that I have become a "re-homer" of motoring antiques. They leave me with no warranty either given or implied. They are too old for that! You may spot something of which I know nothing. It happens.
