Alfa Romeo was all about the engine, and the 6C 2500 engine evolved from that of the 6C 1500, first seen in 1927. This six-cylinder twin overhead cam engine helped to establish the marque's reputation, and in addition to its competition career, it was also used in the touring cars. The engine increased to 1 750 cc, then 2 300 cc in 1934, and from 1936 was fitted in the 6C 2300 B, a model featuring all-round independent suspension. This was still rare at the time, and reflected the research carried out by Alfa Romeo into the qualities of handling and comfort. By 1939 the engine had grown to 2. 5-litres, giving the model the extra power and versatility that had been lacking. The very expensive 6C 2500 stood out for its luxurious finish, and attracted a wealthy clientele that appreciated special sports cars. The coachwork evolved alongside the engineering, starting with the fairly rigid bodies of the early 1930s, and developing into much more streamlined forms. Different coachbuilders tried their hand at these sporting chassis, leading to some very beautiful berlinetta and cabriolet versions. One of the most prolific was Felice Bianchi Anderloni, founder of the Touring workshop.
Following the war, constructors adapted the 1930s designs to deal with the immediate demand. At Alfa Romeo, the 6C 2500 resumed service and the production of this exclusive and expensive model continued on a very limited scale until 1953. Over a 14 year period, 2 594 examples of the 6C 2500 were built, all versions together. It was the last 'grand style' Alfa Romeo, as the marque then looked to produce a more affordable model in greater numbers. This would be the 1900, launched in 1951.
The 6C 2500 on offer has the special feature of having never been fully restored. Cosmetically, it was repainted many years ago, and consequentially has a charmingly original appearance today. What's more, the car retains its original engine and gearbox. The car has been always well looked-after and is today in good mechanical order.
This Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport has belonged to three well-known Italian collectors, including a certain Mr O. Zari who organised an ASI certificate to be issued in 1983. The car then joined the important Alfa Romeo collection belonging to Ugo Isgro, in the Trévise region, before becoming part of a German collection based in Landshut, near Munich. In 2008, it took part in the Mille Miglia historic retrospective.
The car today comes with a "Fahrzeugpass" from the German federation "Deuvet", and a FIVA identity card issued on 13 December 2007.
This is a prestigious model, with elegant coachwork and a racy engine. Being in such lovely original condition, it is an enviable proposition that will be eligible for all the best historic events, including the Mille Miglia.
