Known as a maker of musical instruments from the end of the 19th century, and more particularly for its pianos, in 1955 Yamaha branched out into the manufacture of motorcycles. Twenty years after its first model, the 125 YA-1, the Japanese company revived the ‘Big Single’ with the XT 500. The new model tied in with the fashion for off-road trails bikes and the XT 500 soon gained its spurs with Cyril Neveu’s two successive victories in the Paris-Dakar, in 1979 and 1980. The model went on to be a worldwide success story and remained in production until 1989.
The example presented here was first registered on 18 August 1978. Acquired in 1989 by the current owner’s family, it has just had a full overhaul by Génération Scrambler in Paris. According to the bill for 1918€, many components were restored or changed; work has included rebuilding the carburettor, adjusting the timing and valve clearances, lubricating all cables, replacing the dampers, checking all electrical connections, and of course an oil and filter change. With only 26, 754km (16, 625 miles) on the clock, seemingly the genuine mileage, this is a real collector’s motorcycle that is ready to take to the road – or the trail!
