SUMMARY

Supplied new by Williams, Manchester, and which was also initially one of their demo vehicles, this is now one of those rarer examples of an X3, or indeed any SUV of this type, in that’s led a charmed and easy life, having never been used a van, never had a tow bar fitted and never been used to transport kids, dogs or rubbish. It’s also been used sympathetically, religiously maintained and been garaged much of its life.

This X3 came to me through a good trade contact of mine, who'd taken it in PX for an almost new Range-Rover Evoque. The lady owner of thirteen years, and the co-owner of a local estate agency had bought the car at just under three years old, and had run it as her company car, through the family business. Her father is also a member of the MB club, which is how I got to know about this car in the first place; as a car person, he'd made sure the family’s cars was serviced properly and on the dot. Also, as the owner was a lady of “a certain age” it was used very sympathetically, and was also garaged throughout most of its life. As such, it's in far better condition than most X3's of its age; the interior still smells new and back seat has hardly been sat in! As mentioned above, it’s never been used as a glorified van either, so like the exterior; the interior is in immaculate condition too; and far removed from the usual crop of “used and abused” SUV’s.

Now normally I wouldn't consider a vehicle that’s covered this kind of mileage, but it’s one of those cars that is just "so right;" even my mechanic said “that’s a proper car” which is almost certainly down to it having been properly maintained and never abused, and as such it’s in better condition than cars that have done a fraction of the mileage. When I think back over the 15+ years I’ve been in the trade, it’s generally low mileage cars that give more trouble, whereas vehicles that have been used regularly and maintained correctly proving to be the least troublesome. That together with the fact that it’s also widely accepted that these precision machines can handle very high mileages with ease, makes a vehicle like this a smart purchase indeed.

I actually bought this car back in June, and have used it occasionally to identify any issues that needed attention. I've had the car fully serviced, including transfer box oil changed and have also sorted out a couple of the usual BMW oil leaks, namely rocker cover gasket, transfer box oil seal and oil filler housing gasket. The front brake pads and rear pads and discs were also replaced, along with the battery.

This car drives absolutely wonderfully, and is most definitely a true driver’s car, and certainly lives up to BMW’s own strap line of “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” It's also extremely quick, yet if driven sensibly, as the engine is so low stressed, it will return very acceptable fuel consumption. The combination of the silky smooth M54 straight six and the superb BMW Steptronic Auto, with manual mode makes for a truly special driving experience, which is further enhanced by BMW’s X-Drive four wheel drive system which is biased towards the rear wheels; this gives excellent handling and grip, but will also happily handle snow, mud, ice etc with ease. We had an X3 as a family car when the “Beast from The East” struck a few years ago, and it proved a very useful and capable tool in the snow. The Hill Descent Control, which was borrowed from Landover as BMW owned them at the time, is very useful when descending snow covered roads.

So, if you’re looking for a well maintained, reliable, and very smart vehicle, that’s great fun to drive but can handle the winter with ease, you won’t go too far wrong with this BMW X3. With a private plate, it would certainly still look like the £30K vehicle it once was, yet being registered before 2005, still benefits from the cheaper rate of road tax.

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!

My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too. I also have an excellent knowledge of Alfa Romeos, BMW, Saab & Audi/ VW's too.

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.

Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.

Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
