EXTERIOR
This desirable 25th Anniversary GTI is finished in a glistening coat of Tornado Red. The paintwork is absolutely first-rate and presents with a deep, lustful shine throughout – we were amazed with the condition upon arrival and still can’t believe it’s actually driven 80k miles. The current owner has very recently treated the car to a £2, 300 cosmetic refresh including all new door and bumper mouldings. Amazingly there are no stone chips at the front end and both sides of the car remain arrow-straight. A truly stunning example in arguably the best colour.
INTERIOR
The Recaro sports seats are trimmed in black Le Mans cloth with subtle red detailing, a perfect match for the exterior paint scheme. The interior remains feeling really fresh throughout, much more in line with a car having done half the mileage. The upholstery front and rear presents with only the lightest of wear, the deep bolsters remaining in particularly sound condition. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gearknob show few signs of use, and in the footwells you’ll still find the original piped overmats front and rear. The special edition plaque in the driver’s door shut shows this example to be number 71 of 1, 800 uniquely number examples.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 1. 8-litre turbocharged engine produces 170hp with a maximum torque of 235 Nm from as low as 1, 950 to 5, 000 rpm. Lifting the bonnet reveals a particularly clean engine bay with absolutely no signs of damage or poor repair. The car is accompanied by a fantastic maintenance record, which is entirely Volkswagen main dealer right up until the most recent service carried out in January this year at 80k miles.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
The 18-inch BBS alloys really set the 25th Anniversary off beautifully, still looking fantastic in their original polished finish with no curb marking or lacquer damage to speak of. The brake calipers also present well with the correct red finish, and all tyres have plenty of tread remaining.
HISTORY FILE
The Golf was first registered in September 2002. It was supplied new to its first owner by Advent VW in Machester and has seen just three additional keepers since then. The accompanying History File is packed full of invoices – including the original bill of sale – along with plenty of past MOT certificates, all owners manuals, and the original 25th Anniversary Edition sales brochure. The service booked is fully stamped at the following mileages: 9k, 19k, 29k, 37k, 46k, 6k, 60k, 68k, 75k, 77k, and finally at 80k miles in January 2020.
