For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Bedford Green Goddess in Green (1956).
Tax Exempt. MOT Exempt. 3 former keepers. Petrol. Large History file. Fully Equipped lockers. 3555 Miles from new.
We are delighted to offer for sale this rare Bedford Green Goddess. This vehicle has been dry-stored in a military collection and as such, has survived without the usual damage one might find to the roof area.
As the photos show, the bodywork survives in relatively good order, but showing the odd, original, age related scratches and dinks. This gives a feeling of honesty to the vehicle and we have elected not to tamper with the current, glossy finish. It looks better than one would expect to find for a vehicle of 64 years old! This vehicle came from a large collection of vehicles owned by an elderly gentleman, and as such, has been shown at regular events and ‘old school’ tinkered with to keep it in running order. We have fitted a brand new battery to the vehicle to ensure reliable starting – indeed, when it arrived we fitted the new battery, pulled out the choke, and pressed the start button… she fired straight up and ticked over quietly at low revs with no drama. Perhaps the very low mileage, keepers and undercover storage have contributed to the vehicle feeling both well sorted and original. It is of course, a very old and large truck – and any future keeper must keep this in mind when thinking about long-term ownership. That said, we have owned several of them without encountering any worrying or major issues. Indeed, one was driven half the length of the country to be brought in! They are a hoot to drive, and have a really good sized cabin for passengers or even serving as a dining room when you reach your destination!
As mentioned, all the lockers are filled with the CES kit one would hope to find on a fully fitted Goddess. The mobile engine survives (we haven’t tested this) along with all the various hoses, reels, attachments and tools. There is a comprehensive file that comes with this vehicle, some of which outlines the various tests that the pump system has been put through by The Home Office. Although we have not experimented with the various systems, one tends to find, due to their build quality, that they either work well, or can be made to work easily. Some people purchase these vehicles for moving large volumes of water, or emptying flooded areas….. they were designed and built to move large quantities of water quickly, so could still be useful today, not only as a show vehicle but a working vehicle too. The addition of the 4WD system means that it can also access areas where it might be most required.
In summary, this is a rare opportunity of acquiring a good quality Green Goddess, which has not suffered from long-term external storage like so many have. It would be ideal for the enthusiast, or slightly eccentric new owner to cherish, enjoy, maintain and improve. Assistance can be provided in getting the vehicle to wherever it is needed without the need for a slow drive home!
