1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit
Purchased new by F. J. Saib from Jack Barclay, this 1988 Silver Spirit was specified in black with silver fine lines and black interior (no piping). Mr Saib traded in his four-year-old Silver Spirit against the car, and was clearly seeking a real upgrade as he specified a number of ‘Additional Options’ in the form of ‘Birds Eye Maple woodwork, four Birds Eye Maple veneered door panels with leather trim to door pockets, Birds Eye Maple picnic tables (both sides), black hide steering wheel and horn button and black leather trimmed cocktail cabinets to rear of front seats’.
This information is taken from the original specification sheet from the car’s file, which is full of charming original documentation and correspondence. With all these options, the total cost of the car was £82, 549. 25. Looking through the correspondence we see that Mr Saib was ‘very displeased at the delivery delay’ on his car, and a later letter from Rolls-Royce to Mr Saib raises the ‘very embarrassing subject’ of an additional invoice for £2, 236. 75 -mortifyingly, they had invoiced for the picnic tables and cocktail equipment but not for the Birds Eye Maple veneering. The history file on this car really is a charming look back into the heyday of Rolls-Royce, where the most British of car brands was at its most exclusive.
Regardless of the teething problems in receiving his pride and joy, Mr Saib held on to his Silver Spirit right up until 2017 where the car passed on to the current second owner. Throughout Mr Saib’s custodianship and that of its second owner the car has covered just 34, 200 miles since new, which is fully documented in the car’s history file. Today the car presents superbly, having been fully resprayed in its factory colour in 2017 with the troublesome Birds Eye Maple woodwork and cocktail equipment untouched and well preserved. There are some minor blemishes on some grill veins and the polished upper section of the front bumper that we would recommend the owner remedy to match the quality of the rest of the car, which we can facilitate this using our in-house expert metalworkers.
To be sold with a fresh service, this is an utterly delightful Silver Spirit with an excellent history, low ownership, low miles and we will be sad to see it go.
