Take one of the best 5 series platforms, give it to one of Germany’s best tuning companies, produce just 577 limited edition models, make 64 of them right hand drive, and just 18 of those manual…and you end up with this. A staggeringly rare and simply awesome 1984 BMW E28 Alpina B9 3. 5.
Finished in Agate Green metallic, this B9 – number 293 - is a superb example of one of the most desirable Alpina models today, costing twice the price of a 528i when released.
But, what did you get for your money?
Inside, on top of the usual high spec factory options like all-electric windows and a sunroof, you got a host of Alpina adornments such as a leather steering wheel, a modified instrument cluster, wooden gear shifter and the fantastically retro Scheel bolstered seats.
Oustide, 16” Alpina wheels, a lowered front spoiler, a boot spoiler, double exhaust and the unmissable gold stripes and lettering made sure everybody knew you were driving an Alpina.
The engine, drivetrain and suspension were all upgraded, too.
The 2. 8 straight six originally supplied with the car to Alpina was replaced with a hugely modified 3. 5 producing 280bhp through a 5 speed gearbox and LSD. The dampers were also replaced with Bilstein items to help keep things under control.
The end result was a stylish, comfortable, beautifully balanced and staggeringly fast 4 door saloon. In fact, when released, it was the fastest 4 door saloon in the world.
This B9 is a real survivor and has only had minor restoration work to keep it in pristine condition. Most recently, the car has benefitted from a new head gasket, rebuilt brakes and suspension, and an all new fuel system.
Rare RHD manual Alpina B9s don’t come on the market very often, and immaculate original examples like this, even less so.
