1991 W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E, finished in the iconic 199 Blue Black Metallic (Blau - Schwartz Metallic) complimented by full black leather, perforated seats, and extended wood front and rear. Drivers armrest, full electric seats, heated fronts, electric windows front and rear, electric mirrors, electric drop-down rear headrests, cruise control, air-con (blowing ice cold) heated rear windscreen, and electric sunroof. All the above in fully working order.
This particular 500E was delivered new to Germany In July of 1991, making it a pre-facelift example, that in our humble opinion, is a better car in general than the facelift, rebadged E500 models. Includes original documents from Mercedes-Benz, stating exactly when it left the factory. It lived in Germany up until 1995, when it then moved to Japan (with proof), and spent most of its life there. The car is completely rust free as a result. It was then imported to the UK in 2014 by the Left Hand Drive Company and has had just £2000 spent on it recently with expert Mercedes specialists, to ensure the car is spot on. The car has had 2 UK keepers (including us). Just over 66, 000 genuine miles (107, 000 km) you only need to look under the bonnet and the condition speaks for itself.
Whatever this car needed over recent years, it got by its previous, very particular owner. This is a proper example, presented in beautiful order. No dents, stone chips, scratches, or flat paintwork. Really does have to be seen to be appreciated.
Discs, pads, tyres all very good. Zero knocks or rattles, gearbox pulls incredibly smoothly, as it should. The engine is effortlessly smooth as well. The 5. 0 V8 is one of the greatest engines ever made, and this example highlights that in the best possible way. MOT’d until February but more than happy to deliver it with a fresh MOT for its new owner. Comes with original manuals, booklets, etc, and even the untouched first aid kit on the parcel shelf.
Equipped with Stainless steel exhaust, giving the engine a minor tweak in sound, while not upsetting the original character of the iconic 500E. Stunning motorway cruiser, providing comfort and speed like very few cars of its time could. Comes with the original exhaust system also. Genuine 3 piece AMG Aero 3 wheels by OZ, newly refurbished and fitted, at a total cost of over £4000, while the original Mercedes 8 hole alloy wheels are also included, and come freshly refurbished with like-new period-correct Dunlop Tyres. Just had four-wheel alignment to ensure everything from a driving point of view is spot on.

For those who don’t know, the 500E story is a fascinating one. During the mid-'80s, rival manufacturer BMW decided to build their own super saloon, a car that wasn’t only a practical family car, but a fast one at that. Something completely capable from every standpoint. As a result of this, an icon was born, in the BMW M5.
Over in Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz felt they had to react to this, with their very own super saloon. The W124 model was already a huge success, selling hundreds upon thousands of cars as the years went by, but it was a car that was never designed to be a performance car down the line. This all changed, when the Motorsport division in Munich decided to create the ultimate super sedan.
Mercedes then set out to build their own version of the M5, and thus the 500E was born. Not before a complicated and unusual process to get there though. Mercedes wanted a huge V8 in the W124 but it wasn’t going to be straight forward. Their production line wasn’t designed to house a W124 with bulging, flared wheel arches, and a 5. 0 V8.
They also wanted the car to be built in much smaller numbers, being assembled by hand, on a much slower production line. They knew they couldn’t do this so enlisted the help of their nearby neighbours, Porsche!
Porsche were apparently in financial trouble at the time, and welcomed the task, reaping the benefits of their big-spending neighbours with a much-needed cash injection. It was later believed that the production of the 500E, under Porsche, helped contribute to them being saved from potential bankruptcy.
So off the parts and chassis went, being sent over from Mercedes to the experts in Zuffenhausen. Production began in 1990, taking place on the same assembly line as the incredible Porsche 959 (a production line wide enough to house the 500E’s extra-wide body) with each car taking 18 days to assemble by hand. Squeezing that magnificent V8 into the beautifully modified, W124’s body.
As a result, the super saloon from Stuttgart produced a massive 330 BHP, nearly 50 horsepower more than BMW’s M5 at the time. More powerful than a Ferrari 348 and even Porsche’s own 911 Turbo, the 500E was nothing short of a weapon! A true Autobahn stormer!
The press gave it the infamous name of “the wolf in sheep’s clothing”
Electronically limited to 260 Kmh, the 500E was faster than most things on the road at the time and reached 0-60 in 5. 5 seconds.
The Chief designer at Porsche at the time, later admitted down the line, that they contributed massively to the car’s chassis and design.
Thanks to all this, something truly special was created. Mercedes hadn’t built anything like this before, and when it came along, it was an instant hit, it was the ying to the M5’s yang, an alternative, something that was even more expensive, even more luxurious, and more importantly . . . Even faster!!!
