1954 Velocette MSS 500cc
Here is a beautifully restored Velocette from 1954 but interestingly fitted with earlier type (circa 1947) long-stroke (81 x 96) engine & gearbox.
The bike is in lovely all round restored condition and has seen regular (but light) use.
Starting is good but a closely followed procedure is required from cold with careful attention not to flood the carb and get the ignition advance / retard just right. Subsequent starting is fool-proof and the engine runs and ticks over beautifully. It is mechanically pretty quiet but is quite crisp to say the least on the exhaust note!
It rides very well and it’s great to experience the characteristic of this sought after long-stroke Velocette 500 engine in a comfortable frame that handles really well.
Gears & clutch are all very well set up. Brakes front and rear are excellent. Smith’s 80mph chronometric speedometer is working well and the charging system (by Lucas dynamo & modern solid state 6v regulator is working correctly.
The bike comes with V5C document. Registration is USL 505.(cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Frame number is RS 4604, engine number is MSS 6706
It is registered as an HISTORIC VEHICLE therefore road tax is free and it s MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is in beautiful, restored but lightly used condition.
The enamel on the frame is a very high standard and in excellent condition. So is the enamel on all the tin-ware.
Pretty well all bright-work is excellent including rims.
Front rim is an excellent Dunlop item with older original type spokes dull but with good clean nipples. Like-wise the rear rim but it is a Jones item.
Front tyre is a hardly used Avon Speedmaster (ribbed) and rear is as new Avon SM MKII.
Seat is excellent. Stands are in good order. The bike is even oil tight!
So here’s a great opportunity to enjoy the torquey delights of the Velo long-stroke 500 MSS motor but in a swinging arm frame. A handsome and unique machine ready to own and enjoy riding on those crisp autumnal motorcycling days over the next few weeks!
