HERE IS my 1957 Sunbeam Supreme, which was the final model of the previously named Sunbeam Talbots Mark 1 and 2. The previous owner kept her for 48 years from 1973 until recently.
And, until around 12 or so years ago, he was using her frequently and with immense confidence - often taking the old girl on runs to France! He also tells us via the car's history file that he purchased the car in 1973.
This really is a solid and rare Sunbeam Supreme. It also looks as though Mr Johnson had an engine change during his ownership as, again, he informs us that the number changed and that it ends in "OD" thus signifying an overdrive gearbox. The switch for overdrive is in the centre of the steering wheel which is where they were fitted at factory on these Supremes. The Mark III (or Supreme) had an engine upgrade to 80bhp from the 2267cc unit and is instantly recognisable by the three port holes on each bonnet side.
The car itself has been stored for several years but I have to say that with a battery borrowed from another vehicle and some fuel supplied by a direct feed under the bonnet, she responded "supremely well" and fired up on the very first press of the button. I moved her gently around the yard to make sure that she drives. There is a slight blow to the exhaust.
Body-wise, she is a strong old girl with a superb chassis. She does not display the common fault of the model, by which I mean rotten door bottoms. Actually, apart from the obvious scar at the bottom of the offside wing (see photo) - where it looks as though there must have been a ding many years ago and now the filler over the top of the metal is lifting - the rest of the panel work is not bad at all.
Agreed, a re-spray would transform her but not every classic car owner wants a trailer queen and so I am selling her as is. Lovely period interior with nice leather, dash (including original Sunbeam factory fitted rev counter which works!), head lining and working metal sunroof.
All in all, a great opportunity to acquire one of these beautifully engineered Rootes Group cars at sensible money. Yes, I know you can go and buy one for a lot more. But each to their own. I actually have a Sunbeam Talbot Mark II for sale here for pretty much twice the asking price of this proud Supreme. So there you are. Context is all.
I can also assist with delivery and so please ask for a quote. Thanks, Martin. the details below.
