THIS beautiful 1950 Wolseley 6/ 80 was - back in 1988 the subject of a tooth and nail battle between the Wolseley 6/ 80 Club and DVLA. The struggle came about due to the fact that this delightful old girl had been off the road for many a long year and it was proving a struggle to "regain" her original registration which was a Sheffield plate MWE 565.
The DVLA was right on the brink of issuing an age-related plate when the system finally gave way to the club's pressure. There is a raft of letters here in the car's large history file recording the fight for the plate. And, lo and behold, DVLA capitulated when the club informed them that this very Wolseley was (in 1988) the SECOND OLDEST ROADWORTHY 6/ 80 KNOWN TO EXIST!
Fair enough, replied Swansea. In that case, and in the interests of motoring history, you can have your original registration back!
So, this mega early model is here with us today and it is in great order. Perhaps now it is THE oldest known example in the world? Built between May 17-18, 1950, she was despatched on May 24 to Kennings Ltd. Her chassis number is 418/ 1958.
In super order, she drives superbly with one of the quietest straight-6 engines I have heard from that era. The sparkling condition of the engine itself suggests it must have been rebuilt. Anyway, it's in great nick and shows excellent oil pressure. Her body panels are excellent for a 1950 car and, although there are some inevitable minor paint imperfections, I do not see them as detracting from the overall beauty of the vehicle.
She appears to have been recently re-trimmed too. These earlier models have different heaters, controls, lighting, panels, trim etc. Even the gauges are in a different configuration. Recently, she has undergone some remedial work to the areas you could refer to as inner sills or the area where floor pans meet the outside of the car. This has been done to an excellent standard (the remainder of the underside looks to be original) and thus saves the next owner from tackling ANYTHING structural on this lovely old Wolseley. What I would describe as the "dummy sills" and their appropriate metal sections are all with the vehicle and simply screw/ bolt back into place to form those wide door check areas with the chrome plates bearing the famous Wolseley crest. They too are there.
All in all, a stunning version of a rare model. And all the rarer for being a 1950 example as detailed above. So, go on. Play Police cars with this iconic vehicle. You know you want to.
