1932 MG F1 Magna
In September 1931 MG introduced a new model to sit between the highly successful ‘M’ Type Midget and the 2. 5 litre 18/ 80 model. The newcomer was the ‘Magna’ which was powered by a 1271cc six-cylinder engine being basically the same unit as used in the Wolseley Hornet. The F1 Magna was available as a four-seat sports tourer, or a ‘Salonette’ which was a close coupled fixed head coupe.
Small six-cylinder cars became very popular in the early ‘thirties, in the quest for smooth running engines with flexibility. The F1 was capable of 72 mph when road tested by the motoring press of the time and fuel consumption was a very reasonable 26 mpg. Some 1250 F1 models were produced in total.
This car left the Works at Abingdon on 8th February 1932 as a Salonette, destined for an MG dealership in Switzerland.
The car was to undergo a full restoration to an excellent standard in The Netherlands including being fitted with correct four seat Tourer coachwork around 25 years ago. The previous owner took part in the Caledonian MG Car Club Tour in 2013 and in a 2, 000-mile round trip the car apparently ran faultlessly not missing a beat.
An appealing MG of purposeful appearance with its sloping radiator and stylish ‘cycle type’ mudguards, this F1 should prove ideal for a variety of events.
