SUMMARY
Supplied by Mercedes-Benz of Edmonton, this is the “Genuine Article” and a very rare beast indeed. It may resemble a stock R170 SLK, but underneath, this is a very different animal, and one which provides blistering performance with handling and braking to match; only 4, 333 SLK’s were produced; 979 were sold in Germany, 2056 were imported into the USA and just 263 of these little pocket rockets found their way to the UK, making this a very exclusive and specialist car.
This particular car is an extremely well maintained and cherished example, in beautiful condition and comes with an exemplary service history; all the jobs relevant to the SLK32 you could ask about have been covered. Although it’s worked its way through five previous owners, which over it’s 20 year life is actually only one every 4 years, the last owner, and MB Club Member, who bought this car from the SL Shop as a “Sunday Car” in 2012, kept it for over eight years. right up to 2020, when I took in in PX against a W463 G-Wagen. During his ownership, the scheduled and specialist maintenance was carried out by The SL Shop, and “bonus” interim service work was done by a more local specialist. Prior to that, it was looked after by Mercedes-Benz of Edmonton, and more recently, the car has been serviced by me (MTSV) to keep the service schedules (on time, not mileage) up to date. A large A4 file of invoices and supporting paperwork also accompany the service book, which contains 13 stamps, all from Mercedes Main Dealers and Mercedes Specialist. In addition all manuals, first aid kit, warning triangle etc etc remain with the vehicle.
The bodywork is in superb condition with none of the annoying and unsightly blisters usually associated with these cars; new (Genuine) wings, which were always an issue with the R170, were fitted at considerable cost in 2015, so unlike most, the potential for wing rust has been negated. The last owner also had the foresight to have underside steamed off and waxoyled three times during in his ownership, which has clearly paid dividends (see photos of undersde on my site.)
The interior is in good order, with no palpable wear to the seating. No holes have been drilled in any of the trim either – many of these car suffered at the hands of fitters of mobile phone kits early in their life. The roof mechanism works exactly as it should too.
It drives exactly as a well maintained AMG car should, infact its flippin' great fun! The AMG tuned Supercharged M112 3. 2 Litre V6 delivers blistering performance with the Speed Shift 5G auto provides quick swift changes and lightening kick down, which can propel you to very illegal speeds, very quickly indeed. All this performance is accompanied by quite some soundtrack too! Handling is pin sharp, with quick, precise steering and very impressive brakes completing the AMG package. This really is quite some machine, and as I’ve previously said, it may look like a Stock R170 SLK on the outside, once you press that loud pedal, you’ll realise in roughly two seconds, its something rather special indeed; I absolutely love driving this car.
Although it shouldn’t be your primary reason for buying a car like this, this era of AMG cars are enjoying steep appreciation in their values at the moment, so as well as being great fun to own, if you don’t pile too many miles on it, and look after it properly, you may even make a tidy profit or at the very least get your money back in a couple of years time.
So in summary, if you’re looking for one of these, your choice is already limited by the fact that there wasn’t that many to begin with. Many of those sadly fell victim to careless, sometimes deluded owners, whose driving ability was outstripped by the capabilities of the SLK32. As such, finding a good one these days is therefore not an easy task, but I think this car fits that bill in that its been used sympathetically, maintained correctly and owned longterm by someone who understood the nature of tyese specialist cars. I’m actually tempted to keep this one myself as I think this first generation of dedicated factory built AMG cars, that is the first crop of cars produced when AMG was first brought in-house, are probably better than money in the bank at the moment.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
