Brief history of this car:
She was built week 23 June 1990 and first registered October 11th 1990 to Prophets Solihull Birmingham (now Sytner Solihull) for their use. She was then registered to a Mr D Hedgecox. In 1993 she was then traded in at BMW Rydale (now Sytner Oldbury) and sold to Mr Raymond Dalton on May 10th 1993 as a BMW approved used car. I have the bill of sale and approved used BMW booklet – he cheekily requested the high end Blaupunkt from another car to be included in the deal! The car was kept in his hands until 1997 where she was sold to a BMW enthusiast by the name Mr Priest and then on August 5th 2000 was sold to Mr A Layton of Kidderminster who loved and cherished the car for 15 years. In 2015 she was sold to the owner of an auto detailing business who enjoyed for a summer before being sold in 2016 to a jeweller from Birmingham - coming full circle back to the city of registration. In late 2016 I bought the car and have enjoyed ever since.
The car has covered 181, 000 miles and is in fantastic condition with extensive work carried out over the years. Going over the masses of paperwork accumulated over the years, the car has wanted for nothing, going at some points 600 miles between servicing. The most recent being carried out this year. Sunroof drain channels have also been kept clear.
Recent major work includes:
2021 – new fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, return and supply fuel hoses and clamps from tank to hardlines, rubber pipe from filler neck to tank. New IMASAF OEM style exhaust front section with silencer (from header to the also replaced rear exhaust section), new sump + oil pan gasket, under body exhaust heatshields stripped and repainted (for my OCD), rear axle mounting points stripped and repainted.
2020 – 16x new hydraulic cam lifters (no ticking top end as common with these cars), new timing chain tensioner (improved replacement part from E36), checked cam, sprockets and timing chain for wear/ slack and all as should be with photos taken for proof. 15” BBS OEM basket weave wheels with new Nankang tyres all round – repainted centre caps with new BMW roundel stickers, new power steering fluid reservoir and pump feed hose/ clamps. BMW parts.
2019 – Valve cover + spark plug wells gaskets, spark plugs, Brembo front discs + pads, Brembo rear pads, gearbox oil change with correct GL-4 grade, new rear anti roll bar bushes and brackets, new OSF suspension arm.
2018 – New Klarius OEM style exhaust backbox and resonator, FEBI driveshaft flex coupling and centre support bearing, differential oil change with new fill plug + washer.
2017 – 2x new front wings with professional paint work blending into doors – bonnet and front bar also repainted at same time for better blending, new NSF front suspension arm/ bushes, new front anti roll bar link and bracket, 4x Bilstein Sport B6 dampers and matching Eibach Pro springs w/ full alignment, OSR wheel bearing. New front and rear 13cm Pioneers speakers until original panels.
2016 – Front jacking points welded and resealed.
2015 – Cooling system overhaul: new water pump, belts, radiator, new breather pipe. Full underside waxoyl. Likely kept protected from new given underside condition.
2014 – Complete rehaul of all rubber pipes associated with intake manifold – fiddly job that nobody wants to do if you know these cars.
2014-1990 – Various work receipts from BMW Rydale including clutch slave cylinder, full timing system and head gasket replacement in 1996 for the princely sum of £1054.
Honest negatives:
Small rust bubble forming on bottom of driver’s door – only minor repair needed. Paint on mirrors is fading. NSF caliper was noted as grabbing slightly, it’s been freed off now but a caliper rebuild kit is included with sale. Small paint chips on rear lip spoiler. Glovebox latch has broken and therefore doesn’t open. In glovebox is the device to reset service light. Car has been kept serviced as documented, but I haven’t been able to reset the service counter! Superficial scoring of rear tyre sidewalls from the seller of the 15" wheels trying to use them on his lowered E30. Not deep enough to be of concern and not a problem with MOT tester.
MOT with no advisories until March 2022 (I also have all of the MOTs dating back to its very first in 1993). The bodywork in fantastic condition with no dents or rusting arches. The car has been babied by me but purchase of new (old!) car necessitates sale.
Here is an extract about what makes the 318is such a special E30:
One of the final models and swansong of the E30 range was the 318iS - a 2 door sports saloon manufactured for only one model year. The 318iS was fitted with the M42 engine, the most up-date-engine fitted to any E30 which continued into the E36. It was equipped with 325is style Sports Suspension (including thick rear anti roll bars and lowered ride height), sports seats, front vented discs, power steering, electric windows, electric mirrors, de-chromed trim, M-tech steering wheel, leather gear knob and gaiter, front and rear spoilers. It started out life to beat the sports models that Volkswagen and other leading car manufacturers were producing at the time (such as the Golf GTI) with a 1. 8l engine. At that moment in time, the only E30 capable of out-performing the GTI was the 325i. The revvy M42 16V DOHC engine was developed which produced 136BHP and was one of the most technologically advanced engines for its time and also made it one of the most fuel efficient E30s achieving around the 33mpg. There were rumours that the 318iS actually out-performed BMWs own 325i and so they restricted the power so sales of the more expensive 325i weren’t affected. But still with 126BHP/ tonne, it gives the 323i a run for its money. Whatever the story, it’s a revvy and reliable rear wheel drive 2 door, with relatively light and very balanced weight. A blast to point down a B road.
