From airplanes to motorcycles;
Harley-Davidson probably needs no introduction, but with Aermacchi it's a different story. Aermacchi once started manufacturing airplanes, but after the Second World War there was hardly any income. Therefore, Aermacchi decided to start producing motorcycles in 1951. Initially scooters and mopeds with an engine capacity of 50cc, but soon also motorcycles with a maximum of 350cc. Thanks to their low weight, high-revving engine blocks and Italian styling, the Aermacchis proved very popular in the 1950s.

On the other side of the ocean, meanwhile, Harley-Davidson saw with great eye how Japanese motorcycle manufacturers conquered the market with lightweight, reliable motorcycles. Harley-Davidson had to react quickly and so decided in 1960 to buy 50 percent of the shares in Aermacchi. That same year, the brand launched the Harley-Davidson Aermacchi.

1972 saw the first full season of racing with the Aermacchi 250 and 350cc racers and they were immediately successful. The machines proved extremely reliable: Pasolini scored points in all the World Cup races he started. In the 250cc class he won three races and finished second in the final standings behind Jarno Saarinen (Yamaha). In the 350cc class he finished third behind Giacomo Agostini (MV Agusta) and Jarno Saarinen. In 1973, Harley-Davidson completely took over the Aermacchi facility in Varese and the name "Aermacchi" disappeared from the tank.
