Renault 5 Monaco – One family/ Auto/ 49k Miles
The first modern era Renault 5 was launched in 1972. It's particular and very Gallic shape (not to mention the gear change!) was a huge hit with the public and press alike but became deeply unfashionable, almost overnight, when the Clio was released.
The "Monaco" , a special edition made between 1988/ 91, was designed to be a luxury version of the R5. It came in a choice of two colours all of which came with the Connolly leather interior complete with suit carrier under the rear parcel shelf.
When Milestones received the phone call from the local gentleman selling the Renault we were sceptical that the car would be as good as he said - in fact it was better.
The engine bay presents very well with inner wings, bulkhead, plastics all very good having been washed down regularly.
The satin beige metallic with dual light brown strip (so 1980's) is remarkable. Panels are arrow straight with exact gaps (there is no doubt that the car has been loved) with two stone chips commensurate with original 30 year old paint.
Quality interior trim and comfort are the best you will find on a R5 with deep pile carpets, soft leather seats, electric windows (that work perfectly) and that ‘suit carrier’ fitted beneath the rear parcel shelf that really does point to the clientele Renault were looking to attract with the Monaco model.
Registered to Red Lion Renault in Barnes this ex-demo has been owned by one family and the history file includes the original order form with confirmation letter from the dealer, a full set of manuals including the original brochure, invoices, MOT’s and original price list confirming the Monaco was £11, 005 on the road. There is also a pack of various gaskets, bulbs and touch up sticks plus several handwritten notes to any new owner.
The R5 could be bought as a standout everyday luxury runabout or as an inexpensive classic that can be used and enjoyed for local trips.
