An RS1600i in sunburst has been on my "want" list for many many years. They were rare 20 years ago so now getting a good one is very hard indeed.
This car was restored by the previous owner 3 years ago, its not perfect as in top show standard i. e. wrong colour fuel tank and copper brake pipes so if you want a perfect one you will have to find another (and pay £40k+). It is a genuine RS with everything identifies this rare model present- Short roof gutters. Two bolt strut top mounts. Correct battery tray. Correct RS alloys with "Ford Motorsport" stamped on one spoke. Ford Motorsport stamped front and rear spoilers. Running the twin coils. Correct RS front suspension. Original glass etched with the reg number. Metal door handles and lock surrounds. RS steering wheel. 3 years ago. The car was stripped to a bare shell, wings replaced and painted inside and out.
The underneath was also painted body colour (see pic). All mechanical components were refurbished or replaced, new suspension, brakes etc. Engine and gearbox overhauled, new performance clutch fitted. Door seals replaced. Alloys refurbished. New cambelt and waterpump. New brake pipes. New fuel tank. Alloys refurbished and new tyres. Folder full of photos and receipts from this time. I would class this work as a very good home restoration, not perfection but excellent. It has passed it's last 2 mot's with no advisories.
The only non-RS parts fitted are XR3i rear quarter "spats" and an XR3i exhaust. I bought the car at the beginning of the year. I performed a "My Car Check" history check which came back clear, never written off. I have since been informed that it may have had a non catergorised claim in 1989. I don't suppose it makes any difference as it's been restored, and was almost 30 years ago but i do have a copy of the "clean" My car check report. The interior is very good compared to most, seats are firm and there are no rips or tears.
The dashboard has had 2 cracks repaired, you can still see them but again its much better than most. Original stereo fitted but not wired in. 1 key fits all locks, 2 keys present. Mileage is showing 59000 which does match up with a DVLA check but i have no proof, it does seem correct though. Hpi clear with report , When i bought the car the paintwork was letting it down, the finish was poor with an "orange peel" effect. It was taken to a local well respected detailing company who wet sanded the whole car, polished and protected the finish. The result is superb, the finish is smooth and really shines. New sticker kit fitted. This was a big job that cost a fortune and took over a week but has transformed the car. I have used it a little over the summer and it really gets noticed.
Drivers will beep at you and give you an approving nod. My favorite was a motorbike who rode along side, knocked on the window and gave me a thumbs up. It is a very "raw" driving experience with no power steering and hard suspension but very addictive,
NB : The car was running fairly well on the twin coils and then it was misfiring lightly so i changed them... big mistake as it runs the same ... sometimes it doesnt start and sometimes it does ... i have the twin coils etc and everything in the box.... rememeber you are buying this as a bit of a project engine wise.... it may start when you come it may not... in the 3 years ive owned it ive done less than 10 miles in it.... thin k it needs a good service and fuel draining.....
