Classic Car Design offers you this very rare 1968 Ford Mustang fastback. We know well the 390 version but much less this "R code" version equipped with an even bigger big block, the famous 428 Cobra jet! Only 1299 were produced in 1968 and only 1044 if we count only the fastback. It is the missing link between the standard models and the Shelby! It was nicknamed the "non-Shelby".
On the outside, the car is superb in its "Sunlit Gold" livery. The chrome is perfect, as are the small 14 inch wheels and their hubcaps. On the bonnet is the Ram-Air system scoop. The four exhaust outlets are well visible under the rear apron, nothing is missing and everything is in perfect condition.
Inside, there is a profusion of chrome and woodwork in the middle of the black upholstery. The Hurst lever in the middle of the centre console has its characteristic "ball" knob. There is also an overhead console with functional lighting. At the rear, we discover the folding bench seat and the boot hatch! A small but incongruous utilitarian touch on this street dragster!
Mechanically, the 428 Cobra Jet is equipped with a rather "aggressive" camshaft and the compression ratio is announced at 10. 6:1! When cold the idle is therefore rather chaotic, but once warm the engine reveals all its rage! Legend has it that this engine was officially rated at 335 bhp but actually developed at least 400! I can believe it, considering the thrust felt when accelerating. The first owner is to be commended for choosing the 4-speed manual gearbox! Only available in GT trim, this big coupe is equipped with disc brakes at the front, the assistance is very powerful. On the other hand, there is no power steering. The little precision of the steering box and the soft suspension take you to a rodeo, this fastback is a real sensation machine!
Beyond its "collectible" character, indeed, this Mustang model is rarer than the Shelby's, this example has been entirely restored in the respect of its original definition, the Marti report is there to attest it. Today the Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry lists 456 68’ fastbacks and only 341 with mechanical gearboxes, this is definitely not just any Mustang...
