The MG brand was founded in the 1920s by Cecil Kimber, who headed the "Morris Garages" of Oxford, a group of dealers belonging to William Morris, Lord Nuffield, founder and owner of Morris Motors ltd.
The great success of the Midget - from the 1936 TA to the 1953 TF - made the MG one of the most important sports car brands in the world.
While the TC had sold around 10, 000 units, the TD was produced in triple quantity, but was kept alive too long, until 1953. It was replaced by the TF, a car that was outdated both technically and stylistically, considering the competition of the time. : it was practically a new vintage car.
All this changed in 1955 with the presentation of the MGA. The very choice of the name of the new model meant that the House of Abingdon had decided to start from the beginning.
The old chassis of the T was completely redesigned so as to be able to create a lower seat for the passengers: so the whole body could be lower and more streamlined. The separate fenders, vestiges of cars from the 1930s, disappeared and merged into the sides - as the Italian coachbuilders had taught since the 1940s - and the car was so successful that from 1955 to 1962 more than 181, 000 were produced.
