Regrettably we have our Manual 1996 Volvo 850R is up for sale.

I won't bore you with the generic copy and paste messages that appear in the for sale adverts regarding these cars, nevertheless grab a brew and find out more about his journey..

Rydell is a massive part of our family, he has been for 10 years, he's had quite some journey with us since we purchased him from a snowy Nottingham, after my best mate found him on this very website back in 2011

He started off life as a bog standard Red Auto 850R, with Charcoal/ grey leather and alcantara interior (best colour combo by far on an R) . I was a stickler for OE back then!!

From the very first day we purchased him he's been up until the last 18 months or so a total labour of love!!

He's now at a stage where he has wanted for absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing!

Rydell has evolved into what can only be described as a fast road car, now supported by a manual conversion, and extensive engine work the list is simply far too much to jot down on a for sale advert.

All the work has bar the engine mapping and turbo rebuild which Tim Williams completed, has been completed by the genius that is Drew Spencer, a Northants Volvo specialist that knows his way around the P80 stuff like no one else.

Rydell has been on show at the NEC 3 times, Classic Motor show twice, and Restoration Live once. He draws attention wherever he goes. Including trips to Caffeine and Machine where he receives lots of attention. VOC featured.

4 years ago i cooked the head after dropping a coolant hose on my way home from work, i limped him home but the damage was done.

While the head was off i had a major conversation with Drew as to what to do with him, queue the extensive work, basically we went big and thought what a great opportunity to give Rydell a refresh, may as well while we are in there eh!

Alongside the major engine work, he's had a complete overhaul of everything. Goes without saying he's had cam-belt etc completed alongside the PCV. New engine pads, Poly bush top engine torque mount, and firewall mount.

Found a low mileage donor V70 T5 which Drew supplied for us as the base spec engine, Original head was sent away for head work.

Manual Conversion (best thing i've ever done)
BC Coilovers (uprated rear springs) ride height can be adjust but it currently looks right, handles like its on rails, no issues with speed bumps either, that said i don't go batting over them at speed in any case!!

The final piece of the Jigsaw was the AP brakes, sent these away for new hardware and powder coating, the 850 has some serious stopping capabilities, and looks epic!!

The spec list is monumental for this build and I know i've missed a hell of a lot out.

He's been built as a reliable daily driver, it was never about chasing big BHP figures with him, but to create a start on the button, a reliable quick road car was always the aim, chasing the magic 400BHP would prove to be even more expensive, so we gave that a swerve.

He's not subtle either, goes like the proverbial stink, he's loud and obnoxious, not to everyone's taste, even Drew thinks Rydell is too loud, he spits flames on gear changes, he pops and bangs on overrun, by the way he's not mapped to do this either! I wouldn't want him any other way, currently running Decat, have the switchable sports cat, and also a switchable straight pipe if that's your thing.

Sailed through the MOT in September with zero advisories, check his history on the Gov website

There are an awful lot of imports over here now, and I won't be drawn into the argument of which is better, a UK car with provenance or a Japanese car with a dry climate. I actually took the R off the road a few years back and completed my own underseal treatment using Dinitrol products

What are you getting?

One of the best examples of an 850R in the UK, with the extensive history pack and all the work he's had carried out you will be hard pushed to find another of this type, bearing in mind other cracking examples aren't coming up for sale and are staying in current ownership.

He's big, he's brash yet refined and comfy as a daily driver, he's thirsty and enjoys regular stops at Shell for some V-Power refreshment!

He's not a show queen, has some stone chips on the front bumper, splitter and also bonnet, it's hard to miss those at warp factor 9!! There is no rust or any bubbling on the front wings what so ever, a few years ago i had the bonnet, front bumper, and the tops of the wings blown in by a local classic car specialist. In all honesty the next thing on the list to do would be the rear bumper, maybe that's my OCD but never the less could do with a freshen up if you want to enter and win the next Volvo Best Kept event.

Slight wear to drivers bolster, but that's to be expected, everything bar the cruise control works as it should including the memory seats, disc changer, through to the tilt and slide sunroof.

Mileage will continue to rise, he gets used and enjoyed throughout and not mothballed.

Private Reg F8 SOR (F 8SOR) will stay on him

All of our toys are being moved on to help with a house move. Simply that's the only reason for sale, will I be gutted when he leaves our family? You bet I will be, Rydell is simply more than a car, he also was used as our honeymoon car too, and will be devastated to see him go, but i'm sure will make the next custodian smile from ear to ear!
