In the mid-fifties when most examples of ordinary thirties saloons were being consigned to the scrap heap, this example was bought by an enthusiastic owner who kept it running as everyday transport until the late seventies. The car was then parked in a garage, emerging forty years later in 2019. During this period of ownership every detail of the vehicle’s history has been documented, including petrol purchases! In 1961 when the original side-valve engine blew up, it was replaced with a 1948 1200cc Sunbeam Talbot OHV engine (they share the same block), and a lower ratio diff was fitted to the rear axle to improve the top speed, now possible because of the more powerful engine.
I have given the engine a light rebuild, including new rings, shells, exhaust valves, head re-surfaced, water pump rebuild, radiator repair, and new hoses. The wiring was very poor, and the dynamo U/ S, so I have done much work on the electrics, fitting a new alternator and fuseboard, coil, burlen fuel pump and repairing the semaphore indicators etc, converting to 12v at the same time and fitting an electric fan and a USB port. It also needed four new tyres and the wheels were shotblasted and coated at the same time. Three of the window regulators were repaired, and a new windscreen fitted.
The end result is a very original thirties saloon capable of cruising at 50mph with decent lights and brakes, in sound mechanical condition and very reliable. All the instruments work, as does the heater. The bodywork and interior display patina in bucket loads (or need complete refurbishment depending on your point of view), though the leather upholstery is in reasonable condition. The gearbox is noisy in all gears other than top, but the rear axle is very quite. I have some two pack paint mixed up in the correct colour. The original registration number is not transferable.
I advertised this car before Christmas at £4500, but have not sold it. Surely at a measly £3500 there must be a taker out there? At anything less it will be consigned to my garden to return to nature, as I need the space.
