SUMMARY
Originally supplied by Greenoaks Mercedes, Maidenhead and owned by them for around six months until April 1992. This 260E was then sold it its first proper owner, a gentleman from Devizes, Wiltshire on 1st April 1992. He kept the car almost a quarter of a century, before passing it to his grandson in 2017, who owned it for a further four years, before selling it to a Mercedes Enthusiast and Club Member.
Although there are around 15 Mercedes Main Dealer stamps in the book, documented service history is quite scant from 2005 to 2021, probably due to lessening use by its aging owner, however it’s clear by the way the car drives that it has been properly looked after. The car is in truly amazing condition, and it’s clear from the lack of rust this has been kept in a dry garage, aided by the fact that it lived all of its life in the milder climate of the South West, so it hasn’t been subject to the destructive savages of more Northerly winters.
However in 2021, the car was given a comprehensive mid life refresh; I say “refresh” as we’re not talking about a restoration here involving new panels and fabrication, this was just simply renewal of old components to bring the car back to its best. This cost a small fortune, but has pretty much made this car as perfect as you could ever hope a 30 year old vehicle to be. As a result, I believe it to be one of the best W124’s currently available.
With the above in mind, this car will more likely appeal to those wanting "The Best" to cherish and use sparingly, and to take to Car Shows throughout the season. That’s not saying it can’t be used daily; it’s a W124 after all, the most practical of classics, but to think of this stunning car in a Supermarket Car park doesn’t sit well with me, and I flinch at the thought of that first “Car Park ding” that inevitably would occur during daily use.
So, in summary, a sought after pre-facelift, straight six cylinder W124 saloon, from the best production period of 1989-1991. From a quality perspective, this is about as good as it got; this was the absolute pinnacle of Mercedes build quality; a standard so high, it will never be surpassed in my opinion. I’ve also always said that out of all the W124 range (excepting the 500E/ E500 and AMG Versions of course) for me the 260E is the perfect combination of the “stock” model range; it seems even smoother than the slightly larger engined 300E. I can’t put my finger on exactly why as both use the same M103 Straight Six, I can only attribute it to the almost square stroke of the 2. 6 version of the M103 unit. This super smooth engine is a perfect compliment to the compliant chassis dynamics of the more rigid saloon body style. Those factors together, for me at least, are a match made in heaven.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
