General info:
The Fiat 600 is a car produced by the Italian brand FIAT from 1955 to 1969, and is considered the icon of the Italian economic boom.
It was the brand's first model with a rear engine, in a project led by Dante Giacosa, the house's iconic engineer, taking advantage of the engine base of another popular model: the Topolino.
The quantity manufactured reached the number of 2, 604, 000 units, in the Turin plant of Mirafiori, an extraordinary quantity for the time. In addition to the units manufactured in Italy, it was also produced in other countries, usually under license.
The most important of these licenses was that of SEAT, which in its factory in the Zona Franca in Barcelona, ??manufactured 797, 319 units, most sold in Spain, but with exports to Finland, Poland, Argentina and Mexico.
It was also manufactured in the former Yugoslavia, under the brand name Zastava, at the Kragujevac factory in Serbia, until 1985. In the USSR a similar vehicle was manufactured under the name Zaporozhets ZAZ-965, since 1960. until 1963.
In Argentina in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was a very popular car, being called Fitito, a diminutive of Fiat. Manufactured by Fiat Concord, S. A. began production of this model in 1962, stopping production in 1981, much later than in Italy or Spain.
Also several derivatives of the 600 came to market, the best known is the Fiat 600 Multipla, minivan with 3 rows of seats and suitable for 6 seats. A convertible model with a canvas roof was manufactured by Fiat itself, but maintaining the structure of the body. There was also the gardener model, which under the name "Jolly", transformed the bodybuilder Ghia.
Sports adaptations also became popular, especially those of the Abarth house, which in addition to marketing more powerful transformations, achieved a wide track record in the competitions of the time.
The technical characteristics can be consulted in detail in the Seat 600 article, since the dimensions, and their evolution, were parallel.
Like the Seat 600 in Spain, the Fiat 600 represents in Italy a good example of the economic miracle that came to northern Italy from 1958 to 1963, becoming popular at the same time as other symbols of the state of the wellness such as TV and refrigerator.
