Description
We are pleased to offer this fine vintage Vauxhall 14/ 40.
A 1926 LM series Princeton Tourer, our car was one of 800 exported to Australia in that year. The 14/ 40 was highly regarded in far flung parts of the Empire where the road conditions demanded a sturdily built motor car.
The 14/ 40 first appeared in 1921. Designed by Clarence King, it featured a 2. 3 litre 4-cylinder side valve engine, three speed gearbox and rear wheel brakes only.
In 1924 the LM series was introduced. Improvements included a higher compression engine with Riccardo designed aluminium cylinder head producing 40bhp, a four-speed gearbox and brakes operating on all four wheels.
Our 14/ 40 remained in Australia and was bought in 1990, dismantled but complete, by Murray Lowe of Sydney. He rebuilt and rallied the car extensively in New Zealand until 2001 when it was imported into the UK by Dick Parrett.
Since its arrival in the UK, the 14/ 40 has benefitted from extensive mechanical work to make it into the thoroughly enjoyable and usable car it is today.
There is an extensive file with the car detailing all the work carried out on the car since its arrival in the UK. There are also photos of the restoration carried out in New Zealand as well as copies of the Vauxhall workshop manual and owner’s instruction book.
The Vauxhall has full weather equipment including side-screens, made since its return to the UK.
Direction indicators have been fitted, a sensible addition.
The original polished aluminium body work looks very sporting and has a delightful patina.
Often overlooked in favour of more overtly sporting cars, the LM 14/ 40 is a super car to drive. The engine is torquey and willing while the gearbox is an absolute joy to use. The steering is light and accurate while the ride and handling are also very good.
Oil pressure is good and steady and the ammeter records a healthy charge from the dynamo. The speedometer is not working, however.
As a capable, medium sized Vintage touring car, the 14/ 40 offers excellent value for money and will surely provide a new owner with much enjoyable motoring.
